For the first time in Lebanon: Romanian language courses

31 august 2011

The Romanian Embassy and the Romanian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with Romania Levant Association and with the generous support of the CLAC Sin El Fil Cultural Center, are proud to inform you that Romanian language courses will start for the first time in Lebanon.

Romanian is a Latin language spoken by about 30 million people around the world and it is the official language of Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Being convinced that language learning is a tool for achieving greater understanding and a key element in the intercultural dialogue between Romania and Lebanon, the Romanian Embassy and the Romanian Cultural Institute decided to start teaching Romanian in Lebanon. This move comes as an answer to the many requests of Lebanese citizens interested to study in Romania, of the business community and of the mixed Romanian-Lebanese families.

The beginner's level courses will take place in the period of September 26th – December 15th, 2011, every Monday and Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00, at the CLAC Sin El Fil Cultural Center. This 12 weeks program is FREE of charge and it is open to all those interested in learning the Romanian language.

This course follows the standards of the European Language Council. The classes aim at providing the students with an opportunity to learn the Romanian language at a basic level and enable them to answer adequately to different public, professional and private aspects of everyday life situations. With respect to this purpose, the course aims at developing both comprehension and expression abilities at the same time, paying equal attention to all four basic skills of communication: listening and speaking, reading and writing. Last but not least, it is also aiming at establishing a first contact with the rich and old Romanian culture and civilization.

The classes will start on the occasion of the celebration of the European Day of Languages, September 26th. For those interested in participating, kindly send an email to rla.lebanon@gmail.com or call 05/924848 ext.133. The deadline for course registration is September 20th, 2011

I hope that the "European Day of Languages" will encourage many people to learn a new language. Especially in the United Kingdom where the interest in learning languages seems to be declining.

You may not know that five schools in Britain have introduced Esperanto, the neutral international language, in order to test its propaedeutic values? The Council of Europe also uses Esperanto. See http://www.goethe.de/ins/se/prj/ets/mlg/gep/enindex.htm

The schools' pilot project is being monitored by the University of Manchester, and I believe the project deserves academic appraisal.

A new online course http://www.lernu.net has 125 000 hits per day and Esperanto Wikipedia enjoys 400 000 hits per day. That can't be bad :)
